Equipping Leaders To Multiply

What’s Your Leadership System?

How do you lead people in such a way that you get results?  This is an extremely important question.  Leaders are confused today because of an unlimited number of voices giving us 3 steps to leadership, 4 methods of management, 5 ways to get results and the list could go on.

Our challenge is not finding a leadership system; our challenge is choosing a system and sticking with it.  I find that when I am struggling as a leader 95% of the time it’s because I got away from my leadership system.  If I simply go back to the disciplined execution of my system it almost always gets me back on track.

For me I prefer Ken Blanchard’s system found in his book The One Minute Manger.  I will post on that later this week.  But for today here are a few tips for using a leadership system…

  1. Find a system that fits your personality and leadership style
  2. Write it down and put it somewhere you can see it regularly
  3. Make the people on your team aware of your system.  A leadership system is not something we do to people, it’s something we do with people.
  4. Don’t abandon your system when you’re frustrated.  I’ve found many times it’s not the system that’s the problem…usually it’s me that’s the problem. So when you feel the system isn’t working find ways to improve it rather than abandoning it.
