Equipping Leaders To Multiply

The Be With Factor of Mentoring

I’ve said it for years, “Leadership development is best done in the context of relationships”. I honestly believe if we neglect the “be with” element of leadership development we will not be effective at developing high quality leaders.  Why?  Because we can teach someone a leadership principle in a class setting and lodge it in their mind.  But it’s only through relationship with another leader they get to see that principle lived out in real life leadership.

I’ve heard it said that “leadership is better caught than taught”.  Each time I watch a seasoned leader live out a critical leadership principle I have the opportunity to process what that would look like in my own leadership.  Paul told Timothy “imitate me as I imitate Christ”  You cannot imitate what you do not see. Modeling is one of the most essential yet overlooked ingredents in leadership development.  And the only way to have a model is to “BE WITH” a leader you can learn from.

Who will you invite to “be with”, observe and learn from your leadership this year?

  1. Mac,
I came upon your web site by accident and have wondered down the years about what ministry God had set before you after serving on our staff at Highland Baptist. Jacque and I llive in Plano and are members of Parkway Hills Baptist Church. I see you have an extensive traveling schedule so if you are back in the Dallas area let us know where we can catch up with you. Our regards to Cindy and your family. ~ David

  2. @Frank Well, since Mac hasn’t responded, I’ll give my (radically less experienced and informed) two cents.

I think the answer is, “It depends.” The answers to a few questions are going to determine that.

What is your relational capacity? Are you an extreme extrovert who needs lots of folks around or an extreme introvert who needs lots of alone time? I think both groups need to be mentoring others, but the quantity of mentees is likely different.

Are you in proximity to the people you are mentoring? If this is mentoring like Mac’s talking about above, you can probably take on more people, as a lot of the mentoring will happen “on the job.” If this is “set up a meeting to talk because you’re rarely in the same place at the same time” mentoring, it’s probably fewer.

What’s the level of investment/mentorship? I lead a volunteer team at my church, and I have offered them every-other-month development meetings to help them grow personally, spiritually, and as leaders. I do a bit of one-on-one coaching (mostly related to the work we’re doing)in between as well. These are people I’m investing in, but it doesn’t rise to the level of mentorship. On the other hand, there’s a guy on my team at work that I’m pouring into constantly: creating opportunities, “on the job” mentoring, weekly coaching meetings, etc.

For me, the number is something like 8-10 people, but to varying degrees. For some that’s just an occasional phone call or meeting. For others it’s pretty intensive.

  3. Indeed great article, by the way I wish to share this. I love to go to church but sometimes it is not possible for me to visit church but our church has software by which I can be in touch with them anywhere, anytime. It is really wonderful to get in touch with church & other member. I think our church use Congregation Builder’s church management software .

that will then become more alert to their presence on Google+.

People soon found recognize that getting listed inside online directories
might lead to a greater internet search engine ranking, and they
    started to exploit that.
