Equipping Leaders To Multiply

Maybe It’s Time to Take a Risk

When was the last time you took a risk?  A legitimate, God inspired, faith filled, “all in” type of risk?

We’re not called to take this type of risk every day; instead it comes in waves, in seasons.  While nothing great ever happens apart from risk many leader spend their time avoiding it.  Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of what people might think, fear of looking foolish many leaders prefer to stay in the safety of their comfort zone.  And unfortunately the love for safety perpetuates a small faith and a small view of God.  It’s undeniable that risk taking is one of God’ primary ways of growing leaders.  (Think Moses and the Red Sea, Joshua and the Walls of Jericho or Elijah and the Prophets of Baal.)

Each time you take a Spirit guided step toward the impossible you’re stretching what you believe about God and about yourself.  It’s the stretch that changes you.  Once you allow God to challenge you to think bigger your mind will never be the same.  Once you allow the Spirit to urge you to pray bigger your faith will never be the same.  Once you lead toward a bigger vision your team will never be the same.  Risk allows you to see the power of God at work, and once you’ve seen His power your faith can face the next big challenge with a God-inspired confidence.

Risk isn’t something that should be avoided but embraced.  What risk has God been asking you to take?  What’s holding you back?

  1. Wow….so true. My current risk would have to be on the subject of leading my family (spiritually). The risk for me is fear. Fear of starting something and not seeing it through. Fear of how it is received. Fear of being taken seriously. But I am working on it. Appreciate the reminder.

    1. Thanks for sharing Brett. Isn’t it crazy how most of our fears are driven by internal insecurities rather than external realities.

  2. I couldn’t have read this post at a more apt time. We are on the verge of launching campuses 3 and 4 at our church, and the word “risk” looms over our heads. Nothing is guaranteed. We do not have all we need (in terms of resources). But we have well-developed teams of passionate teams who bear our DNA and want nothing more than to make a dent in this world for God’s Kingdom. The next weeks will be risky. The following months even riskier. Either God supplies or this is going to fall flat. We’ve done about all we can do to prepare. Now it’s time to put the plan into action and rely on God every step of the way.
    Thanks for the post.

  3. Thank you for this post that I SO needed to hear! I was reading another blog and this popped up at the bottom as another post I should read. It was no coincidence. Pure GOD! Thank you for allowing God to speak through you. Definitely what I needed to hear on my day of asking Him to speak to me clearly for specific purpose.
