Equipping Leaders To Multiply

Assessing Poor Performance

All leaders have to deal with performance problems of employees from time to time.  So how do you assess the problem?  Here are eight things to consider:

  1. Is it a lack of knowledge?  If so you need to provide training
  2. Is it a lack of experience?  If so you need to provide observation and feedback
  3. Is it a lack of clarity?  If so you need to provide directive leadership (Tell them who, what, when, where and how)
  4. Is it a lack of confidence?  If so you need to provide supportive leadership.  Don’t give them answers but ask thought provoking questions that guide them to making the right decision on their own
  5. Is it a lack of competence?  If so you need to consider repositioning or adjusting job responsibilities
  6. Is it a lack of focus?  If so you need to provide guidance on priorities
  7. Is it a lack of commitment?  If so you need to provide motivation
  8. Is it a lack of submission?  If so you need to provide a reprimand

The reason for the poor performance determines the leaders response.
