Equipping Leaders To Multiply

There’s Not a Leadership Problem in the Church

We’re kicking off a brand new series at Seacoast called Road Trip.  This six week series is entirely dedicated to teaching leadership principles.  This weekend I will be teaching about a biblical approach to leadership development.

You know for years I used to say, “There’s a leadership problem in the church.” Well I admit I was wr–, I was wro—, OKAY I was wrong. I no longer think there’s a leadership problem in the church. I think there’s a leadership development problem in the church. The leaders are there, our congregations are filled with entrepreneurs, managers, supervisors, teachers, coaches – all people who lead on a daily basis. While leaders may be there many times we have lacked an effective strategy for recruiting and developing them.

You know I imagine Moses was complaining back in Exodus 18, “There is a leadership crisis in the nation!” He was drowning trying to lead the nation and meet the needs of the people all himself.  But then his father in law Jethro came along and showed him – it’s not a leadership problem, it’s a leadership development problem.  Moses had plenty of leaders to draw from he just wasnt recruiting or developing them.   In Exodus 18:17-18 Jethro said, “”What you are doing is not good.  You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.”  Moses immediately put a system in place. He recruited and trained men to oversee 1000’s, 100’s, 50’s and 10’s. Then all the sudden leading this Mega church, uh…I mean Mega nation got a whole lot easier.  The people were there all along, he just needed a system to prepare them for the leadership role.

What adjustments do you need to make in your leadership development strategy?
